Personally, I think Richard's individual ideology is super inspiration and I think that, although he is just sharing his story, many people are learning valuable lessons out of the way that he lives his life. I know that I don't want to live under anyone else's definition of something, which is something that I think Richard lives by as well.
As anyone could say about any country, the American society is a very unique place. Our society impacts everyones life differently, which Rodriguez expands on in this interview that I found called "An American Life"
Honestly, this is just a really cool quote that I found by Rodriguez.
Hi Julia! I love the quote and also agree with your arguments. It can be very overwhelming for people trying to adjust to new ways of living, nevermind dealing with the hardships that come with those being assimilated. Societal ideals should not define a person ever. The unique individuality of each individual should be accepted and respected for all people.
ReplyDeleteI think Rodriguez's lack of labels helps makes his messages even clearer as well. It's him maintaining his individuality through his resistance of what society wants to define him as. Him living by his own definition of what he wants his life to be fights back against the society that tried to force his assimilation into typical American ideals.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your comments. So excited that you looked at the American Life video. I really liked that although as I said in class I enjoy listening to Rodriguez. He is a very interesting person, a challenging thinker of our times.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the quote you included and connection to the American Life video. Very insightful!
ReplyDeleteIt's important that we as human beings value our own identities. It's not fun to live under someone else's expectations and definitions of who we are, but rather it's up to us to define who we want to be.
ReplyDeleteHi Julia! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on this. I also thought it was empowering in a way that Rodriguez only goes by "Richard Rodriguez". His story really impacted and changed my thinking on this topic and was truly inspirational!
